  • Description

In a boxing match staged in Salisbury, July 4, five white boxers - including two from South Africa - clashed with five Africans - the first time in Rhodesian history that white has met coloured in a boxing ring.

Well over 30,000 Africans and several hundred Europeans crowded the arena as the first bout between P. Kleynhans of Pretoria and 'Tiger' Shekie Mpoto of southern Rhodesia got under way. Kleynhans, obviously the stronger and faster of the two, soon secured a points lead and, despite some effective right hooks from Mpoto, went on to win the match comfortably.

The next match was rather an uneven affair. L.Nel of Pretoria met unbeaten Solomon Duli Chida of Rhodesia. Nel won the contest on a knockout after a disappointing performance from Chida.

An effort to promote multi-racialism in Central Africa, the contest was organized by the National Sports Trust of Rhodesia.
