  • Description

New Zealand's Summer expedition to Antarctica has arrived at Scott Base to relieve the Winter expedition.

New Zealand's antarctic expedition contributes to an international programme of research into ionospherics and auroral physics. Scott Base is one station in a world network of stations which make continuous recordings of the state of the ionosphere and at Arrival Heights an automatic auroral radar station measures the disturbances caused by aurora.

The Summer expeditions which arrive in the Antarctic Spring will stay until Autumn when the relief ships bring the returning Winter expedition. The ships must time their run so that they can get into McMurdo Sound and out again before the pack ice starts to freeze and lock them in.
