  • Description

An estimated billion dollars worth of cargo is hijacked from trucks in the United States each year. Companies have spent millions of dollars developing methods of combating the hijacking which has increased three-fold since 1968. One new method being tested in New York involves computers. Trucks setting out on a long trip across the United States are giving a planned route which is fed into a computer built into the truck's cabin. If the truck is hijacked and taken over a different route a siren sounds and the truck comes to an automatic stop. Unlike most hijacking devices this one is not under the control of the driver. He cannot turn the device off.
