Background: It's summer holiday for all the schoolchildren in Norway. The holidays start with midsummer celebrations on June 23. and of they go into the country and onto the beaches. For some of those not so lucky to have a holiday spot out of town: to some of the kids who will spend their summer in Oslo H.M.S. TYNE on a fleet visit to Oslo had a special treat a midsummerparty for all the children who would come aboard. Some 500 children of ages between 6 and 12 climbed the gangway escorted by anxious parents who soon found out they had nothing to worry about, the kids could not be in safer hands than of the men and officers of the Royal Navy, who went all out to give the kids their party of the year, and a memory for keeps.
Highlight of the party were the pirats who gruesomely attired entered from a real piratlaunch across the Submarines climbed the railing of the TYNE and put up a tremendous, battle of wooden sabres in front of the awestricken children. Thek??? however soon found out that the pirates were as kind as their real sailor friends in pushing the swings loading the chutes and above all in carrying large quantities of Ice-cream and cake from the galley to the foretaste where everyone got their little appetites amply satisfied. There was a real airplane swinging from the bridge along a wire down to the deck, the biggest thrill success of all to slide down in that plane. there was a cinema show with mickey mouse, and even when the party was over and one was safely down the gangway there were more PIRATES on the quai dealing out fistfuls of sweets. - So the rumour goes among Oslo children there was never a birthday party like that Pirate party on the British warship -- and when will there be another Royal Navy visit?
As for officers and men of the TYNE, by the looks they really enjoyed the fun and by the looks of the ratings looking down the gangway as the kids parted there were many a father and big brother whose kids back home were very close just than.
