The French experimental installation "Mirabelle" was officially inaugurated earlier this month at Serpukhov, near Moscow. The ceremony took place on the eve of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev's visit to France.
During that visit France and the Soviet Union agreed to cooperate closely in Europe on the basis of non-interference in internal affairs, non-use of force and the inviolability of existing frontiers. The two countries also signed a 10-year economic agreement, under which each country will help build large industrial plants in the other.
The project commissioned at Serpukhov completed an important stage for joint experiments of soviet and French scientists, which will give important information on the structure of matter and the laws of the microworld.
The "Mirabelle" complex -- a liquid hydrogen bubble chamber -- will operate in conjunction with the world's biggest proton accelerator, at Serpukhov.
