  • Description

SIX BRITISH MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT, VISITING MALAWI FOR A 10-DAY TOUR UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY ASSOCIATION, ON TUESDAY (NOVEMBER 22) VISITED PRESIDENT BANDA AT HIS PALACE IN ZOMBA, AND THEN FLEW TO THE NCHALO SUGAR ESTATE, NEAR CHIKWAWA, TO INSPECT THE SUCOMA PROJECT.

THE NCHALO SUGAR ESTATE IS LOCATED IN THE CHIKWAWA DISTRICT OF THE SOUTHERN REGION OF MALAWI IN A HITHERTO UNDEVELOPED AREA. IN MID-1963 THE LONDON-BASED FIRM OF LONRHO LIMITED BECAME INTERESTED IN THE PRODUCTION OF SUGAR CANE IN THE AREA.

THE PLANTATION WAS BEGUN, AFTER EXPERT ADVICE HAD INDICATED THAT THE AREA WAS SUITABLE FOR THE GROWTH OF CANE, AND IN MID-1965 THE LONRHO COMPANY FORMED A WHOLLY OWNED SUBSIDIARY COMPANY - THE SUGAR CORPORATION OF MALAWI LIMITED (SUCOMA) TO OPERATE THE NCHALO SCHEME.

ONE OF THE MAIN OBJECTS IN ESTABLISHING THE SUCOMA PLANTATION AND FACTORY WAS TO MAKE MALAWI SELF-SUFFICIENT IN SUGAR TO AVOID THE COST OF SUGAR IMPORTS FROM RHODESIA.

THE VISITING PARLIAMENTARIANS WERE SHOWN ROUND THE PLANTATION BY THE MANAGING DIRECTOR, MR. G. PERCY.
