  • Description

World heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali went to nearby Augsburg from Munich in West Germany n Saturday (15 May) and met former European heavyweight champion Karl Mildenberger in an exhibition sparring session.

Mildenberger, now 42, retired when Ali stopped him after 12 rounds in their world title fight in Frankfurt in 1966.

He is a southpaw like Richard Dunn, the British and European champion who will be challenging Ali for the title in Munich on 25 May.

The world champion arrived in Munich on Friday (14 May) to prepare for the fight and immediately nicknamed Dunn "Frankenstein".

The Munich public, which is as conservative and formal in its behaviour as most of West German society, has been left agog at the fle???boyant procession of helpers and camp followers who accompany Ali almost everywhere in a fleet of gleaning limousines.

The champion began his build-up for the fight with Dunn with his first roadwork session on Saturday.

He made it clear that his training was aimed chiefly at shedding the excess weight which he carried in last month's defence against Jimmy Young of the United States.

Ali, who now wright more than 220 pounds (100 kilos), has said he wants to go into the ring against Junn at 2514 pounds (96 kilos).
