Background: Reigning world champion Jackie Stewart of Great Britain, driving a Tyrell-Ford, on Sunday won the 200-mile (318-km) Argentine Grand Prix - the first event in the 1972 formula one world championships.

Denis Hulme of New Zealand was second in a McLaren, and Jacky Ickx of Belgium third in a Ferrari.

SYNOPSIS: The 1972 formula one world championships opened on Sunday with the Argentine Grand Prix in Buenos Aires. The 200-mile race was run in gruellingly hot weather.

Jackie Stewart, in a Tyrell-Ford, took the lead from the start, chased by Argentina's Carlos Reutermann, in a Brabham.

Stewart, the British reigning champion, held onto his lead, setting a fierce pace that proved too much for some of the cars.

Despite the heat, the 95-lap race was watched by an enthusiastic crowd estimated at over 100-thousand.

Last year's winner, Chris Amon, retired with clutch trouble in his Matra. Only 11 of the 21 starters finished the course, and the result - first Jackie Stewart, second Denis Hulme of New Zealand in a McLaren, third Jacky Ickx of Belgium, in a Ferrari. So Stewart starts the new championship with nine points three ahead of Denny Hulme.
