Background: A great sea mystery --- the disappearance of French explorer-sailor, Count de la Perouse and his two tiny ships in the Pacific Ocean nearly two centuries ago --- was solved recently with the finding of an anchor near the British Solomon Islands.

A painting records the start of the story when King Louis the 16th of France in 1785 briefed La Perouse on the ill-fated exploratory voyage of the Pacific. The ships sailed through the Philippine Isles, north to Japan then south tobTasmania. In 1788 Le Perouse set off again from Botany Bay, Australia, northward-bound and was never seen again.

The mystery was solved when a French admiral was sent recently to Noumea, New Caledonia, in the French Loyalty Isles, off Australia, to examine the anchor. The relic, from one of La Perouse's ships, was found on a lonely beach near Vanikora in the British Solomon Islands.
