Background: More than 35, 000 Vietnamese refugees from Cambodia have been ferried down the Mekong River by the South vietnamese Navy in the past week, and about six temporary camps have been set up to house them.

Many of the refugees have never lived in Vietnam. They have spent all their lives in Cambodia, but chose to return to their motherland after reporter of large-scale massacres of Vietnamese by Cambodian troops last month.

When they arrive at the camps, the refugees are given food and a little money, and settled in tents, or in schools, pagodas and temples. They will remain in this temporary accommodation for about three months. They are also being screened by security officials to weed out any Viet Cong guerrillas among the refugees.

Many of them are farmers and fishermen, and the South Vietnam authorities are planning to offer each family a plot of farming land in the rich Mekong Delta. Each one will also get a grant of about 7,500 piastres (about GBP 12 sterling or U.S. $ 30) to start then off in their new homes.
