  • Description

South Korean will shortly send another army unit - the White Horse, or 9th Infantry, Division - to South Vietnam, reinforcing the Tiger Division which is already there. The White Horse division is completing its training in the Yong-Mun valley, about 50 miles northeast of Seoul.

The White Horse Division's training ground is a rugged and beautiful valley, filled with waterfalls. The trainees undergo 21 separate courses, said to be the most difficult in South Korea. There are three stages- drilling; infantry practice; and the rugged mountaineering course at the end. In the mountaineering course, the trainees must cross over 400 feet of cable stretched 200 feet above the valley floor. The men are instructed to scream "Yug Yok Tae", which means "Ranger", as they cross the cable. Others practice various techniques of mountain descent. Karate training and combat firing are also taught.

The White Horse Division, which took its name from an engagement at White Horse Hill during the Korean War, is expected to take ship for combat duty in Vietnam in September.
