    The Kenyan President, Jomo Kenyatta, was at the University of Nairobi on Friday (29 October) to award degrees to graduate and post-graduate students.

    SYNOPSIS: Altogether more then 1,700 students received degrees and diplomas at the ceremony at the University. Four people received Doctorates of Philosophy from the President, who is Chancellor of the University. The successful students came from the faculties of arts, medicine and science.

    Another 91 people received Masters degrees in law, medicine, architecture, planning, science, business studies and education. Most of the Bachelor degrees went to graduates in the Faculty of Education, where nearly 700 students were successful.

    Kenyan Vice-President, Mr. Danial Arap Moi, also attended the ceremony. Other faculties with large numbers of graduates were Arts with 207 people and Commerce with 113. There were also nearly 100 students awarded degrees in medicine.

    President kenyatta also awarded an honorary Doctorate of Literature to the Secretary-General of UNESCO, Mr. Ahmadou Mahtar M'Bow, who comes from Senegal. Mr. M'Bow is in Nairobi for the 19th general conference of UNESCO which opened earlier in the week.
