  • Description

In Santiago, capital of Chile, on Tuesday (4 September), several hundred students belonging to the Christian Democrat Movement organised a petition calling for the resignation of the country's Marxist President Dr. Salvador Allends. They organised a post in the city centre where many people queued to sign the appeal, which, the students said, was inspired by Dr. Allende's own statement: "If the people went me to, I will resign". But the effort was abandoned when the students clashed with Government supporters, and police were called in to clear the square.

This was one of several demonstrations and clashes in Santiago over the past few days that marked the third anniversary (on September 4th) of Dr. Allende's election to the Presidency. One pro-Allende march was said by government supporters to number more than half a million people. Riot police have been on the alert to prevent street battles.

Meanwhile, the economic crisis continues. The lorry-owners, whose prolonged strike is estimated to have cost in excess of 200 million U.S. dollars (GBP 80 million sterling), have been joined in a sympathy walk-out by the white collar workers and professionals union, and by the shopkeepers maintaining a token shutdown.
