  • Description

THOUSANDS OF MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN FROM ALL PARTS OF BRITAIN, AND SCORES OF OTHER COUNTRIES BRAVED THE SNOW FLURRIES AND BITTERLY COLD WINDS AGAIN TODAY (THURSDAY) TO PAY THEIR PERSONAL TRIBUTES AT SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL'S FUNERAL BIER. SO FAR, MORE THAN 100,000 PEOPLE HAVE FILED PAST THE COFFIN. TODAY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE FOR THE CRIPPLED, DISABLED AND BLIND - MANY OF WHOM SUFFERED THEIR DISABILITIES DURING THE 1939 - 45 WAR - TO MAKE THEIR TRIBUTES WITHOUT JOINING THE QUEUE. MEANWHILE ARRANGEMENTS AND REHEARSALS FOR THE STATE FUNERAL ON SATURDAY CONTINUED.

FOR MUCH OF THE DAY THE QUEUE WAS OVER TWO MILES (3.2-KMS) LONG, WITH PEOPLE STANDING PATIENTLY FOR HOURS AWAITING THEIR TURN TO MOVE INTO THE CHILLY, STONE HALL, LIT BY SIX FLICKERING CANDLES AROUND THE CATAFALQUE, AND SPOTLIGHTS TRAINED ON THE UNION JACK COVERING THE COFFIN.

SOME 7,000 BRITISH SERVICEMEN WILL TAKE PART IN THE HOUR LONG FUNERAL PROCESSION. AFTER THE SERVICE IN ST. PAUL'S, THE COFFIN - BORNE ON A TWO TON NAVAL GUN CARRIAGE USED FOR FOUR ROYAL FUNERALS - WILL BE TAKEN TO THE RIVER THAMES NEAR THE TOWER OF LONDON WHERE IT WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO A LAUNCH FOR THE SHORT TRIP UP RIVER TO WATERLOO RAILWAY STATION. FROM WATERLOO THE COFFIN WILL BE TAKEN BY TRAIN TO THE SMALL OXFORDSHIRE VILLAGE OF BLADON, WHERE THE PRIVATE BURIAL SERVICE WILL TAKE PLACE ATTENDED ONLY BY THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY.

THIS EVENING QUEEN ELIZABETH, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, PRINCESS MARGARET AND HER HUSBAND LORD SNOWDON WENT TO THE 900-YEAR-OLD HALL WHICH FORMS THE HEART OF THE PALACE WHICH HOUSES THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT TO PAY THEIR TRIBUTES. OTHER DISTINGUISHED VISITORS TODAY INCLUDED MR. WILSON, AND A FORMER BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, EARL ATLEE. SIR ROBERT MENZIES HAS ALSO VISITED THE CATAFALQUE.
