  • Description

Soviet champion ski jumper, 22-year-old Yuri Kalinin is in fine form for the Winter Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria, next week. On saturday (24 January) he won the U.S.S.R. cup for the 90 metre (yards) ski jump in the final Soviet trials before the Games at Bakuriani in the Caucasus.

Kalinin, who comes from the Leningrad region, took first place with jumps of 107.5 metres (yards) and 107 metres. Both Kalinin and Alexei Borovitin, who came second, competed in the last world championships at Falun in Sweden in 1974. Borovitin beat Kalinin at Falun--taking the bronze medal while Kalinin was unplaced--but on Saturday his best jumps were 107 metres (yards) and 105-5 metres.

The newcomer to the Soviet team will be 19-year-old Sergei Saichik who came third with 105.5 and 100 metre jumps. He has performed in the Four Ski Jumps tournament in Austria and West Germany but he has never before represented his country. Soviet sports writers are predicting a great future for Saichik, who, like Kalinin, comes from the Leningrad area.
