Background: AT LEAST SIX PEOPLE WERE KILLED DURING THE FOUR HOURS THAT TYPHOON "KAREN" RAGED OVER THE ISLAND OF GUAM LAST SUNDAY NIGHT AND EARLY MONDAY MORNING. MORE THAN 45,000 ARE HOMELESS, AND IT WAS ESTIMATED THAT REPAIRS TO PUBLIC SERVICES WOULD TAKE AT LEAST FOUR MONTHS.

FIRST FILM FROM THE STRICKEN ISLAND SHOWS DEVASTATION AT AMERICA'S ANDERSEN AIR BASE. SERVICEMEN WORKED AMONG THE WRECKAGE OF HANGERS AND OFFICE BUILDINGS, AIRCRAFT AND VEHICLES. ALL RUNWAYS HAD BEEN RENDERED UNUSABLE BUT EMERGENCY PLANS WERE MADE TO ALLOW RELIEF PLANES TO FLY IN.

IN A RADIO APPEAL LAST WEEKEND THE ACTING GOVERNOR OF GUAM, MANUEL GUERRERO, SAID THE ENTIRE TERRITORY HAD BEEN DEVASTATED BY TYPHOON KAREN. HE THOUGHT THAT 95 PER CENT OF THE COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS HAD BEEN DESTROYED, ASKED THAT GUAM BE DESIGNATED A DISASTER AREA, AND CALLED FOR ALL POSSIBLE AID.

CHURCHES, SCHOOLS AND OTHER BUILDINGS STILL STANDING WERE USED TO HOUSE THE HOMELESS, THEY MAY HAVE TO STAY THERE FOR WEEKS UNTIL OTHER TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION HAS BEEN PREPARED. THE US MILITARY AIR TRANSPORT SERVICE WAS FLYING IN EMERGENCY SUPPLIES, INCLUDING TENTS AND POWER GENERATORS.
