Background: UNDER THE GREAT VAULTED ARCHES OF WASHINGTON CATHEDRAL, ADLAI STEVENSON DELIVERED A EULOGY TODAY CALLING SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL AN "INCOMPARABLE MAN" WHOSE CAREER RESTED ON A SIMPLE FAITH IN GOD.

VICE PRESIDENT AND MRS. HUBERT H. HUMPHREY AND MANY OTHER NOTABLES OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH, LISTENED INTENTLY AS THE AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED NATIONS SAID:
"IN THE LAST ANALYSIS, ALL THE ZEST AND LIFE AND CONFIDENCE OF THIS INCOMPARABLE MAN SPRANG, I BELIEVE, NOT ONLY FROM THE RICH ENDOWMENT OF HIS NATURE, BUT ALSO FROM A PROFOUND AND SIMPLE FAITH IN GOD.

"IN THE PRIME OF HIS POWERS, CONFRONTED WITH THE APOCALYPTIC RISKS OF ANNIHILATION, HE SAID SERENELY: 'I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT GOD HAS DESPAIRED OF HIS CHILDREN.'
"...THE GREAT ARISTOCRAT, THE BELOVED LEADER, THE PROFOUND HISTORIAN, THE GIFTED PAINTER, THE SUPER POLITICIAN, THE LORD OF LANGUAGE, THE ORATOR, THE WIT-YES, AND THE DEDICATED BRICKLAYER--BEHIND ALL OF THEM WAS THE MAN OF SIMPLE FAITH..."
THE OCCASION WAS A MEMORIAL SERVICE IN THE EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL, A SERVICE IN WHICH BRITAIN AND AMERICA JOINED HANDS ACROSS THE SEA IN TRIBUTE TO CHURCHILL, HALF-AMERICAN BY BIRTH.

THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. JOHNSON COULD NOT ATTEND, BUT DAUGHTER LYNDA WAS THERE. THE PRESIDENT IS STILL RECOVERING FROM HIS BAD COLD. AT FIRST MRS. JOHNSON HAD PLANNED TO ATTEND, BUT THE DAY WAS SO CHILLY AND HER OWN COLD SO RECENT THAT DOCTORS ADVISED AGAINST IT.

MILITARY MEN FROM THE EMBASSIES OF THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH ACTED AS USHERS. AT THE BRASS CHOIR OF THE U.S. MARINE BAND PLAYED THE BRITISH AND UNITED STATES NATIONAL ANTHEMS. THEN THE BELLS OF THE GREAT, UNFINISHED CATHEDRAL ON A HEIGHT HERE SOUNDED FORTH, HALF MUFFLED.

DURING THE SERVICES, THE CATHEDRAL CHOIR SANG AN ANTHEM BASED ON ECCLESIASTICUS: "LET US NOW PRAISE FAMOUS MEN..."
AND THE RT. REV. FRANCIS B. SAYRE JR., DEAN OF THE CATHEDRAL, SAID A PRAYER HE HAD ESPECIALLY COMPOSED:
"LET US COMMEND TO THE MERCIFUL REDEEMER THAT GREAT SPIRIT WHOSE WIDE SYMPATHY STOPPED NOT AT ANY BORDER, BUT SPANNED THE SEA..."
