  • Description

United States Secretary of State William Rogers climaxed his tour of eight Latin American countries on Saturday (26 May) with more than an hour of discussions with Chilean President Salvador Allende.
The two men talked at the Chilean Embassy in Buenos Aires, shortly before Mr. Rogers wound up his tour.
The two men arrived in the Argentinean capital on Thursday (24 May) and the talks were arranged informally when the two met at a reception for outgoing Argentina President Alejandro Lanuase.
There was no indication of the content of their discussions.
Although the whole purpose of Mr. Rogers's tour was to lay the foundation of a new Latin-American-U.S. policy, observes felt the Allende-Rogers talks would be the most important event of the tour.
Relations between Washington and Santiago have been cool because of the economic reforms and nationalisation of U.S.-owned industries by the Marxist leader and his left wing government and also because of allegations of U.S. interference in Chilean politics.
Security way very heavy for Mr. Rogers' visit, with heavily-armed military police stationed along the strategic points of his route into both Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires.
SYNOPSIS: South American leaders, including Chile's President Salvador Allende, gathered in Buenos Aires last week before the inauguration of the new Argentine government of Dr. Hector Campora.
The presence of the Chilean leader was a stroke of good fortune for visiting United States Secretary of State William Rogers who was just winding up a tour of eight Latin American nations.
Though under tight security, Mr. Rogers attended a reception in the Argentine capital for outgoing President Alejandro Lanuses. Mr. Rogers and Dr. Allende were introduced and a meeting was informally arranged. The two met on Saturday, just before Mr. Rogers ended his tour and returned home.
Mr. Rogers, seen here leaving the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires, did not reveal the content of their discussions. He had been touring Latin America laying a foundation for a new United States policy in the area. Observers said the Allende meeting cold case relations between the two nations and turn out to be the highlight of the eight-nation tour.
