  • Description

A society function in Beirut, incorporating a parade of latest fashions, raised funds last weekend for the Southern districts of Lebanon which have suffered in the fighting between Israeli and Palestinian Commando forces.

The evening, organised by the recently-formed Committee In Aid of South Lebanon, attracted more than 600 socialites to the new and palatial Al Bustan hotel where Greek, English, and American models of both sexes danced and moved to the rhythmic drive of a British pop group.

Originally the fashion show was to have been the highlight of a Ball and Banquet, but following a bombing raid in South Lebanon, President Helou asked that the Ball be deleted from the programme as a mark of respect to those killed.

The show was staged by London fashion coordinator Ann Lambton and featured clothes from such top designers as Mary Quant, Susan Locke, and Michael Fish. Many of the garments displayed a Chelsea influence.

Tickets for the parade were over 7 pounds sterling (17 dollars) each, and with other fund-raising realised a total profit of 10 thousand pounds sterling (24,000 dollars) for the South Lebanese, in just two days.
