  • Description

OVER 60 PEOPLE WERE HURT IN A VIOLENT DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE NORTHERN IRELAND GOVERNMENT'S OFFICE IN LONDON TODAY (SUNDAY). FIFTEEN OF THE INJURED WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL -- EIGHT OF THEM POLICEMEN.

MOUNTED POLICE FORCED THEIR WAY THROUGH THE DEMONSTRATORS AFTER A PETROL BOMB HAD BEEN HURLED AT THE ULSTER OFFICE IN MAYFAIR'S BERKELEY STREET.

WHILE SOME DEMONSTRATORS SCATTERED IN FRONT OF THE HORSES, OTHERS PELTED THE MOUNTED POLICE WITH STICKS, STONES AND BOTTLES.

AT THE SAME TIME, 100 POLICE FORMED UP TWO-DEEP IN FRONT OF THE ULSTER OFFICE. THE PETROL BOMB MEANWHILE BURNED OUT HARMLESSLY ON THE PAVEMENT -- THROUGH FOUR FIRE ENGINES WERE CALLED OUT TO DEAL WITH IT.

A POLICE BUS BRINGING UP REINFORCEMENTS WAS HIT BY A LARGE CAN OF ORANGE PAINT -- THE COLOUR OF THE PROTESTANT MAJORITY IN NORTHERN IRELAND.

SOME DEMONSTRATORS PARADED WITH THE TRICOLOUR FLAG OF THE IRISH REPUBLIC. THE DEMONSTRATORS CHANTED "ROYAL ULSTER CONSTABULARY -- S.S."
THE POLICE FINALLY FORCED THE DEMONSTRATORS OUT OF BERKELEY STREET INTO PICCADILLY, WHERE THEY RAN AMONG THE TRAFFIC, STILL THROWING BOTTLES.
