Background: Togo President Gnassingbe Eyadema and President Mathieu Kerekou of Dahomey have called on Portugal to grant immediate independence to Portuguese African territories.

Their demand came in a joint communique issued at the end of a 24 hour official visit made by President Evadema to Dahomey this month.

The two President also agreed to reactivate the Togo-Dahomey Commission, created in 1965, to report on political, economic, Social and cultural co-operation between the two countries.

The communique added that it was the conviction of both Presidents that the country had an inalienable right to exercise complete sovereignty over its natural resoruces. Both Presidents agreed to move rapidly towards a West African Economic Community to protect their interests.
