  • Description

A large scale scientific exploration of the Antarctic called Operation Deep Freeze '64 is now drawing to a close. Under it, a wide range of studies of polar life and environment have been carried out.

The work has, of course, imposed a variety of unusual conditions on the scientists, and on the men of the U.S. Navy's Antarctic Support Force which has been providing logistical and other support. Among other tasks, the Navy has been collecting specimens of marine life from the waters off Cape Royds for study.

Teams of Navy frogmen, working in the extreme Antarctic cold have had to plunge in the frigid sea off Cape Royds to get the specimens. They work largely under water, placing the collected material into plastic bags, then bringing the bags to the surface to turn them over to the scientists. Except for a couple of scientists, the only spectators are the penguins. They seem to regard the whole business as a highly entertaining show, and usually gather around to watch.
