• Short Summary

THE PRIME MINSTER OF KENYA, MR. JOMO KENYATTA, ADDRESSED A MASS RALLY OF HIS COUNTRYMEN?

  • Description

THE PRIME MINSTER OF KENYA, MR. JOMO KENYATTA, ADDRESSED A MASS RALLY OF HIS COUNTRYMEN IN LIMURU YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). THEY GATHERED TO LISTEN TO HEAR HIM TALK ABOUT KENYA BECOMING A REPUBLIC ON DECEMBER 12, THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF ITS INDEPENDENCE.

SPEAKING IN THEIR NATIVE TONGUE TO A MAINLY KIKUYU AUDIENCE, MR. KENYATTA EXPLAINED THAT HE WOULD BECOME PRESIDENT AND THAT QUEEN ELIZABETH OF ENGLAND WOULD NO LONGER BE THE HEAD OF STATE.

MR. KENYATTA SAID KENYA WAS DETERMINED TO ACHIEVE COMPLETE INDEPENDENCE AND WOULD TERMINATE THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S POST AND HAVE ONLY A PRESIDENT. HE THOUGHT THAT THE PRESENT GOVERNOR-GENERAL, MR. MALCOLM McDONALD, WAS A GOOD MAN BUT SHOULD NOT RANK ABOVE THE PRIME MINSTER OF THE COUNTRY.

THERE HAS BEEN CONSIDERABLE SPECULATION ABOUT THE NAME OF THE MAN WHO WILL BECOME VICE-PRESIDENT. FAVOURITE FOR THE POST IS SAID TO BE MR. OGINGA ODINGA, A 52-YEAR-OLD LUO TRIBESMAN WHO IS AT PRESENT THE KENYA MINISTER OF HOME AFFAIRS. ANOTHER SUGGESTION IS MR. RONALD GALA, THE FORMER LEADER OF THE KADU PARTY WHICH RECENTLY CROSSED THE FLOOR OF PARLIAMENT TO SUPPORT MR. KENYATTA.
