  • Description

New Greek Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis yesterday (Friday, 26 July) completed the formation of his government, by swearing in a further 20 minister and under-secretaries. Earlier, there had been reports that Mr. Karamanlis had experienced difficulty completing his cabinet, due to rivalry between conservative and progressive groups wanting to take part.

Mr. Karamanlis, the 67-year-old Conservative, who only three days earlier returned from exile to form the civilian government to succeed seven years of military rule, included in his cabinet number of young members of resistance groups who had opposed the army-backed regime.

Two crucial tasks face the new government. The first priority is to seek settlement to the Cyprus crisis. Then Mr. Karamanlis and his cabinet is pledged to bring about a speedy return to democratic rule in Greece.
