  • Description

AT THE ATLANTIC MISSILE RANGE, CAPE CANAVERAL FLORIDA (place - source), TECHNICIANS PREPARE TO LAUNCH THE POLARIS AX-1 (POLARIS A X - ONE), THE FIRST OF THE CURRENT SERIES OF ADVANCED TEST VEHICLES IN THE DEVELOPMENT FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM FOR THE NAVY'S POLARIS FLEET BALLISTIC MISSILE. THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE TODAY RELEASED THESE FILMS OF THE TEST FIRING. CONDUCTED IN SEPTEMBER, WHICH BEGAN THE FINAL DEVELOPMENT PHASE OF THE NAVY MISSILE. THE DEVELOPMENT SCHEDULE CALLS FOR A POLARIS MISSILE CAPABLE OF BEING FIXED FROM A SUBMERGED SUBMARINE IN THE FLEET IN 1960. THE FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM CONDUCTED FOR THE NAVY BY LOCKHEED MISSILE SYSTEMS DIVISION, HAS BEEN PROCEEDING FOR MANY MONTHS AT CAPE WITH FIRING OF A VARIETY OF ROCKETS SPECIALLY DESIGNED TO TEST VARIOUS COMPONENTS AND SYSTEMS UNDER DEVELOPMENT FOR THE POLARIS ITSELF. HERE THE POLARIS TEST MISSILE IS IN THE ACCESS STAND, WHICH HAS PLATFORMS AT SEVERAL LEVELS, ENABLING LOCKHEED'S TECHNICIANS TO SERVICE THE MISSILE AND PERFORM CHECKOUT OPERATIONS. THE HYDRAULICALLY OPERATED STAND BEGINS TO ROLL BACK, AND THE MISSILE IS REVEALED...IF YOU WERE STANDING ON TOP OF THE ACCESS STAND, THIS IS HOW THE TEST MISSILE WOULD LOOK...HERE, LOCKHEED'S TECHNICAL CREWS ARE MAKING FINAL PREPARATIONS BEFORE THE AREA IS CLEARED OF ALL PERSONNEL. NOW THE CHECKOUT IS COMPLETED, THE UMBILICAL CORD CONNECTED TO GROUND INSTRUMENTATION FALLS AWAY. THE TEST MISSILE'S POWERFUL SOLID-PROPELLANT ENGINES LIGHT OFF, AND THE MISSILE BEGINS ITS FLIGHT. EVEN BEFORE LAUNCH, TELEMETERING INSTRUMENTATION CARRIED WITHIN THE POLARIS THAT MISSILE HAS BEGUN TRANSMITTING TO GROUND RECEIVING STATIONS VALUABLE DATA OF PERFORMANCE OF SISTERS AND EQUIPMENT, TEMPERATURES, VIBRATION AND A MULTITUDE OF FACTORS.

INFORMATION IS TRANSMITTED TO GROUND TAPE RECORDERS AND RECORDING OSCILLOSCOPES ON WELL OVER 100 CHANNELS...POLARIS WEAPON SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT IS BEING DIRECTED BY THE SPECIAL PROJECTS OFFICE OF THE NAVY BUREAU OF ORDNANCE. LOCKHEED IS MISSILE SYSTEM MANAGER AND PRIME CONTRACTOR. FROM A BRIEF FLIGHT TEST SUCH AS THIS, NAVY AND LOCKHEED MISSILE EXPERTS GAIN INFORMATION, WHICH WILL PROVE MOST VALUABLE IN DESIGN REFINEMENT OF THE FINAL POLARIS FLEET WEAPON.
