  • Description

Malawan President Dr. Kamuzu Banda has strongly denied harbouring white mercenary soldiers for use in Mocambique against any possible future black government. In the past few weeks newspapers in Britain, Tanzania Rhodesia, South Africa and Mocambique have carried stories about white mercenary soldiers being gathered in Malawi for a counter- offensive in Mocambique against any takeover attempt by FRELIMO the African nationalist organisation which has fought a decade-long war against the Portuguese government.

"The Observer" in London, England, one of the most explicit in its allegations claimed that the army was being organised by Colonel 'Mad Mike' Hoare - a former British army officer who led white mercenaries in the Congo in the early sixties in support of Katanga secessionist leader Moise Tshombe fighting against the central Congolese government of Patrice Lumumba. The Observer said Hoare's backer was influential right-wing Mocambiquean businessman Jorge Jardim - who recently escaped arrest in Lisbon, Portugal by taking refuge in the Malawi Embassy there. Jardim later fled to Malawi itself and the portuguese Government broke off diplomatic relations with Malawi over the protection it was giving him - also alleging that Malawi was encouraging 'terrorist activity'. The Portuguese Government, in power since the April coup against the regime of Dr. Marcello Caetano is pledged to giving independence to its three Portuguese colonies - Guinea-Bissau, Angola and Mocambique - despite white 'backlash' reaction in the two latter territories.

Dr. Banda in his denials on Thursday (August 8), said the allegations about white mercenaries were 'unvarnished and naked lies.'
In recent week he has also denied Portuguese Government claims that he is aiding white Mocambiquan efforts to retain the colong in white hands.
