Background: UNITED STATES MARINES HAVE BEN ENGAGED IN HEAVY FIGHTING DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS IN AN AREA NEAR THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY OF THE DEMILITARISED ZONE SEPARATING NORTH AND SOUTH VIETNAM.

THE BATTLE, NAMED 'OPERATION PRAIRIE', HAS BEEN AIMED AT MOVING VIET CONG UNITS FROM SEVERAL STRATEGIC HAMLETS ON THE SOUTHERN PERIMETER OF THE DEMILITARISED ZONE.

VIET CONG FORCES ARE REPORTED TO HAVE FOUGHT HARD TO HOLD THEIR POSITIONS DESPITE AERIAL ATTACKS IN WHICH CONVENTIONAL AND NAPALM BOMBS WERE DROPPED.

THIS FILM SHOWS AN ASSAULT BY MARINES ON THE VILLAGE OF GIA BINH ON THURSDAY OF LAST WEEK.

SEVEN TANKS WERE USED IN THE ADVANCE OVER MINE FIELDS, AND TANKS EQUIPPED WITH FLAME THROWERS WERE USED TO RAZE THE VILLAGE.

UNITED STATES MILITARY AUTHORITIES SAID THE VIET CONG FORCES WERE DEFENDING A SERIES OF TUNNELS RUNNING THROUGH THE DEMILITARISED ZONE.

UP UNTIL YESTERDAY MORE THAN 640 VIET CONG TROOPS WERE REPORTED BY AMERICAN OFFICIALS TO HAVE BEEN KILLED IN 'OPERATION PRAIRIE'.

CAPTAIN CHARLES KAPPELMAN DESCRIBED THE GIA BINH ACTION.
