Background: The annual exhibition and flying display by the Society of British Aircraft Constructors opened at Farnborough, Sept 5, to Senior members of the armed forces, civil and military aviation authorities, and airline representatives. This year considerable interest centres around the vertical take-off and landing aircraft, the Short SC 1. The show will be open to the general public on Sept 9.

Visitors saw the Short SC 1 go through its smooth transition from jet-borne hovering to wing-borne flight after a vertical take-off. On show in the exhibition hall were models of the new types of vertical take-off aircraft now on the drawing boards. Going through its paces was the only new airliner on show, the Avro 748, a short medium-range turbo prop. In the long-range turbo prop class the Vickers Vanguard attracted much attention.

One of the day's highlights was a demonstration "scramble" by four Valiant bombers of Britain's V-bomber force. The Valiants were off the ground in under two minutes. Seen in service with the Royal Air Force for the first time was the Lightening all-weather fighter, which flies twice the speed of sound.

A full-sized Blue Steel stand off bomb was also shown for the first time. Blue Steel will soon be in service with the V-bomber force. The Farnborough Show, which closes on Sept 11, may be the last in which only British aircraft are displayed. With the need for interaction co-operation foreign aircraft with British engines may be on show next year.
