  • Description

Seemingly endless queues formed at some 150 registration centres yesterday (sunday) as refugees who fled from the West Bank of occupied Jordan during the recent Middle East crisis started to fill in the application forms which would allow them to return home.

The operation involves about 200,000 refugees who poured over the river between June 5 and July 4. Israeli authorities in the occupied territory have announced that those who crossed after that date would not be allowed back.

Tonight (Monday) is the deadline for completing the form, a fact which gives an air of urgency to the applications. Yesterday, Jordanian officials were expressing fears that not all the refugees would complete the forms in time, despite the erection of a number of temporary camps for this purpose. The procedures takes an average of fifteen minutes, involving work from officials of the Social Welfare Ministry, the Education Ministry, and UNRWA - the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.

The Jordanian government will supply refugees with rations for three months and each one will be given 5 dinars when he eventually leaves the Eastern bank of the Jordan for the Western side.
