  • Description

AUSTRALIAN ROY EMERSON'S TWO-YEAR REIGN AS WIMBLEDON MEN'S SINGLES CHAMPION ENDED DRAMATICALLY ON THE CENTRE COURT AT WIMBLEDON TODAY (MONDAY). TOP-SEEDED EMERSON, THE 29 YEAR-OLD WORLD NUMBER ONE PLAYER, INJURED HIS SHOULDER IN A HEAVY FALL AND WAS BEATEN 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, BY HIS UNSEEDED COMPATRIOT, OWEN DAVIDSON, WHO IS RANKED ONLY SIXTH IN AUSTRALIA.

EMERSON, WHO HAD CONCEDED ONLY FIVE SETS IN WINNING 18 SUCCESSIVE SINGLES MATCHES AT WIMBLEDON SINCE HIS LAST DEFEAT IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1963, LOOKED SET FOR ANOTHER SWIFT WIN IN THE QUARTER FINAL CLASH WITH DAVIDSON.

IN DRIZZLING RAIN HE TUCKED AWAY THE FIRST SET IN 15 MINUTES, BUT IN THE THIRD GAME OF THE SECOND SET HE CHASED A DROP SHOT, SLIPPED ON THE GREASY TURF AND SLID INTO THE BASE OF THE UNPIRE'S CHAIR. HE WAS OBVIOUSLY IN PAIN FROM HIS LEFT SHOULDER, AND FROM THEN ON HE HAD DIFFICULTY IN THROWING UP THE BALL TO SERVE AND IT BLUNTED HIS WHOLE DYNAMIC GAME, PARTICULARLY HIS RETURN OF SERVICE WHICH IS ONE HIS MATCH-WINNING SHOTS.

DAVIDSON SAID AFTERWARDS THAT HE WOULD HAVE HAD NO CHANCE AGAINST EMERSON IF THE CHAMPION HAD NOT FALLEN. BUT DAVIDSON, A 22 YEAR-OLD LEFT-HANDER, UNDOUBTEDLY RAISED HIS OWN GAME AND PLAYED WITH ALL-COURT COMMAND TAKING THE NEXT TWO SETS: 6-3, 6-4.

IN WHAT WAS TO PROVE THE FINAL SET THE INJURED EMERSON STAGED A BRAVE RALLY. HE PULLED UP FROM 1-5 TO 4-5, BUT THEN DAVIDSON, DESPITE A NERVOUS DOUBLE-FAULT, HELD SERVICE IN THE NEXT GAME FOR THE MOST UNEXPECTED WIN OF HIS CAREER.
