  • Description

SEVERAL TONS OF FISH - ESTIMATED TO BE WORTH 100,000 KRONER - WERE KILLED IN THEIR CAPTIVE NETS IN THE HARBOUR AT KALUNDBORG, DENMARK, DURING THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 22-23. THE CAUSE IS BELIEVED TO BE AN OIL TANKER, WHICH DISCHARGED OIL INTO THE SEA OUTSIDE THE HARBOUR DURING A STORM.

THE OIL WAS CARRIED INTO THE HARBOUR; AND IN ADDITION TO THE FISH, MANY SEA-BIRDS ALSO PERISHED. KALUNDBORG NOW HAS PLENTY OF OIL, FOR A BIG NEW OIL REFINERY WAS RECENTLY OPENED THERE.

FISHERMEN MANAGED TO FREE SOME OF THEIR "LIVE CATCHES" BY TIPPING INTO THE SEA NEARBY NET-LOADS OF FISH BEING HELD IN THE HARBOUR. POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF THE KILLER OIL IN THE HARBOUR.
