Background: A tense atmosphere gripped the area around Merom Hagolan, in the Golan Heights, as the villagers began clearing up after a duel between Israeli and Syrian artillery. One man killed and two were wounded.
Buildings in the area were badly hit in the battle yesterday (Wednesday).
Cars were burned out, a tractor was wrecked and a clothing store badly damaged. About 50 cows were killed.
The Israelis claim to have destroyed six Syrian aircraft and 15 tanks during the day.
The artillery battle, with tank attacks, followed an Israeli air strike at a Syrian army post from which it was claimed guerrillas had infiltrated to plant mines in the Israeli area of the Golan Heights.
