Background: THE 14TH CHEMICAL ENGINEERING EXHIBITION CONGRESS "ACHEMA" OPENED IN FRANKFURT TODAY (FRIDAY). THE EXHIBITION HAS ATTRACTED SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, AND BUSINESSMEN FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. SOME ARE SELLING NEW IDEAS, WHILE OTHERS ARE ABSORBING THEM AND STUDYING THE LATEST FACTORIES AVAILABLE.

ONE OF THE LARGEST EXHIBITS IS A GLASS REACTOR PLANT. MANY FOREIGN COUNTRIES ARE EXHIBITING, AMONG THEM HUNGARY, BELGIUM, AND DENMARK. ROM HOLLAND, WHERE SO MUCH LAND HAS BEEN RECLAIMED FROM THE SEA, THERE'S A DRAINAGE PUMP.

THE JAPANESE STAND SHOWS SOME FILTER APPARATUS, AND FROM SWITZERLAND THERE'S AN INTERESTING EXHIBIT CALLED A "THERMAL IMAGE." ANOTHER SWISS ITEM ON SHOW IS CLAIMED TO BE THE WORLD'S SMALLEST GRINDING MILL. THE TINY MILL CAN GRIND PARTICLES DOWN TO LESS THAN .001 MILLIMETRES. IT VIBRATES AT UP TO 3,000 REVOLUTIONS A MINUTE.

FROM GERMANY THERE IS A CIGARETTE-SMOKING MACHINE, AND FROM FRANCE A PLANT FOR PRODUCING LIQUID OXYGEN.

ON THE LUXEMBOURG STAND IS A FILTER WITH A CONTINUOUS ROTARY ACTION WHICH IS CLAIMED TO BE CAPABLE OF FILTERING COARSE OR HEAVY MATERIALS THAT WOULD OTHERWISE BLOCK AN ORDINARY FILTER.

COMBINED WITH THE EXHIBITION IS THE EUROPEAN CONVENTION OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING. DURING THE CONVENTION THERE WILL BE LECTURES AND DISCUSSIONS ON NEW MATERIALS AND METHODS AVAILABLE TO THE CHEMICAL ENGINEER, AND THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN RESEARCH AND APPARATUS.

MORE THAN 50 FILMS WILL BE SHOWN DURING THE NINE DAYS OF THE CONVENTION TO ILLUSTRATE THE LATEST TECHNIQUE.
