  • Description

Leaders of the Greek and Turkish communities on Cyprus yesterday (May 3) expressed guarded hope that they were making progress towards a settlement on the island.

After winding up their final session of talks with United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim, Greek-Cypriot leader Glafkos Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash discussed progress at a news conference, in Vienna.

They had managed to find one major point of agreement -- on reopening Nicosia International Airport. But they weren't able to reach a compromise over the resettlement of the island's 200,000 refugees.

Nevertheless, both sides have been considering a new administrative system, that would help both communities live in peace in separate areas under a central government. They'll be discussing it further when the talks resume early next month.
