  • Description

A year after the death of former president internationally renowned statesman, Jomo Kenyatta, a special commemorative ceremony was held in Nairobi on the 22nd of August in memory of his contributions of Kenyan and African development. The ceremony was attended by members of the Kenyatta family and the present Kenyan administration.
A year after the death of President Jomo Kenyatta, flags were at half mast throughout Kenya as the nation remembered its most famous statesman.
His wife Mama Ngina Kenyatta attended a special commemorative ceremony at the Kenyatta mausoleum in nairobi on Wednesday (22 August) along with her husband's successor, President Daniel Arap Moi and a State Guard of Honour.
President Moi laid a wreath laid a wreath at the foot of the former President's tomb before listening to a sermon from Bishop Wellington Mulva which spoke of how Jomo Kenyatta's philosophy had united the Kenyan people "in the spirit of peace, good relations and love." The large crowd was moved by the sight of Mama Ngina Kenyatta also paying homage to the memory of her husband, who died last year at the age of eighty-two and held the title "Founder of the Nation", as a result of his fight for Kenyan independence from the 1940's , through the troubled Mau-Mau freedom fighting days, and up until Kenya's eventual independence in 1963. He was made Life-President in 1974 and became more and more linked with his "Nyayo" philosophy of love, peace and unity, despite a past that had involved political violence and imprisonment.
The nation's founder was remembered with all the trappings of State by massed bands from both police and army. Yet the occasion did not lack personal involvement for the current President, Daniel Moi, who had worked closely with Kenyatta as his vice-President and chosen successor.
