  • Description

The Malagasy Republic is undergoing agricultural reform. Recently it lost its Prime Minister in an air crash. He was one of the programme's keenest supporters.

SYNOPSIS: This film was shot before the crash which killed the Prime Minister. In an effort to encourage farmers on the Indian Ocean island to grow more rice, the Prime Minister. Lieutenant - Colonel Joel Rakotomalala, and other officials joined workers at a new rice project. Home production of rice is not matching consumption. This project covers 228 hectares (563.38 acres) in the plain surrounding the capital, Tananarive, which the government has distributed to local farmers.

Colonel Rakotomalala was flying to an agricultural project when the helicopter he and several senior government members were travelling in crashed about 110 miles (170 kilometres) from Tananarive.

On Wednesday (4 August) Prime Minister Rakotomalala and those who died in the air crash were given state funerals. They took place in Tananarive, but memorial services were also held throughout the country.

The funerals in Tananarive were watched by large crowds including members of the diplomatic Corps and the Supreme Council of the Revolution. As well as Colonel Rakotomalala, the Minister for Rural Development, Pierre Rajaonah, was among those killed. The eulogy at the funerals was read by President Didier Ratsiraka.

Also in the fatal crash were the Armed Forces Chief of Staff, Colonel Alphonse Rakotonirainy and the Chief Military adviser to the Prime Minister, Major Martin Rampanana. An eight-day period of national mourning was imposed and the Malagasy government decided not to allow any foreigners to attend the funeral.
