  • Description

Argentina's worst fire, which razed four blocks in an industrial district of the capital, Buenos Aires, was brought under control on Monday (December 10) -- but firemen expected that another two or three days would be necessary to extinguish it completely.

Fed by rubber, chemicals, fuel, timber and other inflammable materials, the blaze swept through part of the working class district of Nueva Pempeya Sunday night (9 December) sending flames shooting a thousand feet (600 metres) into the air.

Two hundred firemen in twenty-three fire engines battled the raging fire as explosions rocked the area throughout the night.

No deaths were reported, but at least thirteen firemen and several civilians were treated for burns and the effects of fumes.

The fire started with a huge explosion at a warehouse beside a rubber goods factory and sent blazing fuel drums flying through the air. The burning drums spread the fire to other factories and warehouses in the area.

Some 1,200 people were evacuated from the area as burning fuel and chemicals spilled through the streets.

The fire lit up the sky throughout the night, with explosions being seen more than 16 kilometres (10 miles) away.
