Background: THE THIRD TEST MATCH BETWEEN INDIA AND ENGLAND WAS ABANDONED AS A DRAW, THERE BEING NO PLAY IN NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 18TH. FURTHER HEAVY OVERNIGHT RAIN PUT AN END TO ANY EXPECTATIONS OF A RESUMPTION OF PLAY AND THE FIFTH DAY, LIKE THE FOURTH DAY, WAS WASHED OUT. HOWEVER, ON THE THIRD DAY OF THE TEST, THERE WERE STILL HOPES OF A DECISION, WHEN AFTER MEETING THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR NEHRU, THE PLAYERS WENT ONTO THE FIELD.

PULLAR AND BARRINGTON OPENED THE ENGLAND INNINGS BUT IT WAS BARRINGTON, THE 31-YEAR-OLD SURREY BATSMAN WHO MADE MOST OF THE SCORING. WHEN HE REACHED 39 RUNS BARRINGTON PASSED HIS 2,000 RUNS IN TEST CRICKET. HE HAD ALREADY SCORED 509 IN THE SERIES, THE BEST AGGREGATE FOR EITHER SIDE IN ANY SERIES BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. HE SHARED A RECORD SECOND WICKET STAND OF 164 WITH PULLAR (89) IN FOUR HOURS TO TAKE THE EDGE OF THE INDIAN BOWLING. BARRINGTON FINISHED THE DAY 113 NOT OUT. ANOTHER FEATURE OF BARRINGTON'S SCORE WAS HIS FOURTH CENTURY IN SUCCESSIVE TEST MATCHES. HE BATTED SIX HOURS FOR HIS UNDEFEATED 113. WHILE HE DID NOT PLAY A SPECTACULAR INNINGS, BARRINGTON PROVED TO BE ENGLAND'S SHEET ANCHOR AND WITHOUT HIM THE SIDE COULD HAVE BEEN IN TROUBLE. ENGLAND'S SCORE AT THE END OF THE THIRD DAY WAS 256 FOR THREE WICKETS.

WITH THE FOURTH DAY RAINED OUT, THE FIFTY DAY BEGAN IN VERY WET CONDITIONS. THERE WERE TWO INSPECTIONS BEFORE THE UMPIRES DECIDED THAT PLAY WAS IMPOSSIBLE. BUT WHILE FINAL DECISION WAS AWAITED THE ENGLAND AND INDIAN TEAMS IMPROVISED GOAL-POSTS FROM CHAIRS AND ENTERTAINED THE CROWD WITH A GAME OF FOOTBALL ON THE RAIN-SOAKED OUTFIELD. INDIA'S FIRST INNINGS SCORE WAS 466.

TWO TESTS REMAIN IN WHICH TO ATTEMPT TO BRING SOME CONCLUSIONS TO THE RUBBER AND END THE DEADLOCK OF DRAWN TESTS IN INDIA.
