Background: HUNDREDS OF PRISONERS SEIZED IN THE ABORTIVE "BAY OF PIGS" INVASION IN CUBA LAST YEAR, WERE FLOWN TO FLORIDA AND FREEDOM LATE LAST NIGHT (SUNDAY) IN A ROUND-THE-CLOCK AIRLIFT AIMED AT RETURNING ALL THE 1,113 CAPTIVES TO THE UNITED STATES BEFORE CHRISTMAS DAY.

THE MEN WERE BEING GIVEN THEIR FREEDOM IN EXCHANGE FOR 53 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF DRUGS, MEDICINE AND BABY FOOD. THE DEAL WAS ARRANGED BY THE CUBAN FAMILIES COMMITTEE -- FRIENDS AND RELATIVES OF THE MEN WHO LANDED IN CUBA, IN THE UNSUCCESSFUL ANTI-CASTRO INVASION IN APRIL LAST YEAR. MR JAMES DONOVAN, A NEW YORK LAWYER, TRAVELLED BETWEEN AMERICA AND CUBA FOR MONTHS IN AN EFFORT TO SECURE FREEDOM FOR THE MEN.

FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF THE FREED PRISONERS HAD BEEN WAITING EXPECTANTLY THROUGHOUT YESTERDAY AT A MIAMI AUDITORIUM JAMMED BY SEVERAL THOUSAND CUBAN EXILES. THERE WERE SIGNS OF NERVOUS TENSION AMONGST THE CROWDS WHO HAD WAITED TWENTY MONTHS FOR THE RETURN OF THEIR MENFOLK, AND MANY WOMEN WEPT WHEN THEY HEARD THAT THERE HAD BEEN DELAYS IN THE DEPARTURE OF THE FIRST AIRCRAFT. THEN CAME THE ANNOUNCEMENT THEY HAD ALL BEEN WAITING FOR (SOF) "WE HAVE JUST HAD A REPORT THAT THE PLANE WILL LEAVE HAVANA BETWEEN 3.00 AND 3.30."
THE FIRST GROUP OF PRISONERS -- MORE THAN 100 MEN -- WERE BROUGHT TO HOMESTEAD AIR FORCE BASE NEAR MIAMI ABOARD A PAN-AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS PLANE. HUNDREDS OF PRESSMEN WERE ON HAND TO GREET THEM, AS WELL AS LEADERS OF THE CUBAN FAMILIES COMMITTEE. BY LATE SUNDAY NIGHT MORE THAN A THIRD OF THE PRISONERS HAD LANDED AT THE AIR FORCE BASE. THEY JOINED THEIR FAMILIES AFTER BEING PASSED BY THE U.S. IMMIGRATION SERVICE, AND TALKING TO PRESSMEN.

THE CUBAN AUTHORITIES HAD SAID THEY WOULD RELEASE THE MEN WHEN 20 PER CENT OF THE PROMISED SUPPLIES HAD BEEN RECEIVED. EARLIER IN THE DAY THE RED CROSS FREIGHTER, "AFRICAN PILOT", ARRIVED IN HAVANA WITH A REPORTED 11 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF RANSOM GOODS ABOARD.

A UNITED STATES IMMIGRATION SERVICE SPOKESMAN SAID THE AIR SHUTTLE WOULD CONTINUE NON-STOP UNTIL ALL THE MEN HAD BEEN FERRIED OUT OF CUBA.
