  • Description

King Hassan of Morocco received M. Pierre Mendes-France, a former French Prime Minister, at his palace at Fez on Friday (January 15). But the explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who last year sailed from Morocco to South America on a papyrus raft, was too late for his scheduled audience with the King.

    M. Mendes-France, Parliamentarian, lawyer, author and Prime Minister of France in 1954 and 1955, was received by the 41-year-old Monarch during a private visit to Morocco.

The Norwegian explorer and author was less fortunate when he arrived at the palace with other members of his 1970 expedition. Through circumstances beyond their control they were late for the audience which was cancelled.

Mr Heyerdahl and his companions sailed their raft "RA 2" nearly 4,000 miles (6,500km) from Morocco to Barbados in 57 days last year to reinforce his theory that ancient Egyptians could have sailed to Central America in similar craft many centuries before Columbus and so be precursors of the Mays and Inca civilisations.

Shortly before the audience was to have taken place it had been announced the Mr Heyerdahl and his crew were being decorated by the King.
