    YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) GREEK NATIONAL DAY - A PUBLIC HOLIDAY IN CYPRUS, WAS NOT MARKED WITH THE TRADITIONAL PARADE. INSTEAD ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS ATTENDED A SPECIAL TE DEUM MASS CELEBRATING THE ANNIVERSARY OF GREEK INDEPENDENCE.

    SCHOOL AND YOUTH ORGANISATIONS BROUGHT BANNERS INTO THE BRIGHTLY-LIT PHANEROMENY CHURCH WHERE THE CYPRUS PRESIDENT, WEARING SCARLET ROBES, LED THE HYMN OF THANKSGIVING.

    GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, THE GREEK AMBASSADOR AND GREEK EMBASSY STAFF, AND MEMBERS OF THE GREEK NATIONAL ARMY CONTINGENT STATIONED IN CYPRUS ALSO ATTENDED THE SERVICE.

    ORGANISATIONS USUALLY PARADE WITH BANNERS THROUGH THE CITY STREETS TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THE GREEK EMBASSY, BUT OFFICIALS SAID THAT BECAUSE OF THE PRESENT CRISIS NO PARADES WERE HELD.
