    ON CHRISTMAS DAY EAST BERLIN FRONTIER GUARDS SHOT AN EAST GERMAN YOUTH AS HE WAS CLIMBING OVER THE WALL. THE INCIDENT TOOK PLACE ONLY A FEW HUNDRED YARDS FROM ONE OF THE CROSSING POINTS OPENED TO ALLOW WEST BERLINERS TO VISIT THEIR RELATIVES IN THE EASTERN SECTOR.

    BLOOD STILL STAINS THE SNOW WHERE PAUL SCHULTZ, AN EIGHTEEN YEAR-OLD APPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN, WAS SHOT IN THE BACK AS HE LAY ON THE TOP OF THE WALL HELPING HIS COMPANION OVER. HE ROLLED OVER THE WALL AND INTO THE ARMS OF A WEST BERLIN POLICEMAN. SIX HOURS LATER HE DIED IN HOSPITAL.

    HIS COMPANION, HARTMUT DUSCHE, ALSO 18, CLIMBED OVER UNHURT. HE WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL IN A STATE OF NERVOUS COLLAPSE.

    SCHULTZ WAS THE 68TH PERSON TO BE KILLED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO CROSS THE BERLIN WALL SINCE IT WENT UP TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO.
