    FIVE MEMBERS OF THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT, LED BY M. RAYMOND TRIBOULET, THE MINISTER FOR CO-OPERATION, FLEW TO DAKAR, SENEGAL, FOR THE OPENING ON MONDAY OF A FOUR DAY MEDICAL CONGRESS. WITH THE MINISTERS WERE DEANS OF THE FACULTIES OF MEDICINE FROM SEVERAL FOREIGN UNIVERSITIES, INCLUDING ABIDJAN, ALGIERS, RABAT BEIRUT, AND MONTREAL.

    MORE THAN 150 OVERSEAS EXPERTS, AS WELL AS REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDICAL PROFESSION AND UNIVERSITIES FROM MANY PARTS OF AFRICA, ATTENDED THE OPENING SESSION.

    DURING HIS SPEECH, PRESIDENT SENGHOR PAID TRIBUTE TO THE ORGANISATION OF THE CONFERENCE, WHICH HE SAID BROUGHT TOGETHER NOT ONLY DOCTORS, PHYSICIANS AND CHEMISTS, BUT ALSO PEOPLE ENGAGED IN RESEARCH AND TEACHINGS. THE MEETING WAS ALSO IMPORTANT, HE SAID, BECAUSE OF ITS INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATION. ONLY ASIA WAS NOT REPRESENTED.

    OTHER SPEAKERS INCLUDED THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR TO DAKAR, MR. J.H. PECK.

    AFTER THE OPENING SESSION, THE OFFICIAL PARTY VISITED AN EXHIBITION AT THE MEDICAL FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF DAKAR. THERE THEY SAW SOME OF THE MOST MODERN EQUIPMENT IN THE WORLD, AND SAW DEMONSTRATIONS OF THE FACULTY'S INVESTIGATION INTO THE TREATMENT OF TROPICAL DISEASES.
