Background: AS Israeli and Syrian ground forces continued on Thursday (18 October) to be locked in apparent stalemate, the Israelis still maintained their control of the air. An Israeli television crew was at hand to see their forces shoot down a Syrian Mig jet-fighter that strayed over their positions at the foot on Mount Hermon. The aircraft exploded in mid-air, but its pilot managed to release his parachute and plummet downwards. However, he was dead when he hit the ground.

In the day's ground fighting, the two armies continued to battle for control of the Damascus road near the village of Sasa. They have been fighting in this region now for six days and neither side has gained the upper hand. The Syrians claimed to have destroyed 30 Israeli tanks in Thursday's combat: Israel asserted that the situation had remained static.
