  • Description

Two weeks after an earthquake and tidal waves hit the southern. Philippines, experts have warned that Taal, one of the country's most active volcanoes, is in danger of erupting.

SYNOPSIS: Government scientists have strongly urged the immediate evacuation of people living on Volcano Island, 100 kilometres (63 miles) south of the capital Manila. Taal last erupted in 1970, causing some damage but no casualties. It exploded in 1965 killing 188 people. The scientists have told the government that they have observed extensive lave streams flowing from the volcano.

They have warned the authorities that the volcano is approaching a critical period. The government says that it has activated contingency plans to meet the threatened eruption and the islanders have been warned. A fleet of evacuation vessels has been placed on standby. The leader of the scientists monitoring the volcano says that they are particularly worried by the extensive steam and smoke spewing from it.
