  • Description

In Italy the divorce law which became effective on December the 18th is already being strongly attacked.

A request to petition for a referendum to remove the new divorce law was presented in Rome on Saturday (16 January) by a group calling itself the National Committee for a referendum.

Anti-divorce groups in Italy have been collecting signatures in support of the referendum.

Under Italian law half a million certified signatures must be collected on the petition, and the constitutional court must give its consent before a referendum can be held.

The first request to petition for a referendum was presented only a week ago, and was accepted by the Court.

Political observers consider the issue potentially explosive because a referendum seems certain to arouse violent controversy in Italy.

The pro-divorce lobby has already warned it will fight the referendum, and may call a counter referendum.

The first referendum request came from II members of the Milan-based Catholic Alliance Movement, which includes Catholic students and professional men.

If a referendum is held it will be the first since Italians rejected the monarchy in 1946, and the first time the electorate has been called to reverse a Parliamentary decision.
