  • Description

PRESIDENT HABIB BOURGUIBA OF TUNISIA TODAY (TUESDAY) TOOK PART IN CELEBRATIONS MARKING HIS COUNTRY'S "VICTORY DAY". THE 62 YEAR-OLD HEAD OF STATE WAS GIVEN A LOUD AND ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME BY HUGE CROWDS AS HE DROVE THROUGH THE STREETS.

AT THE BEGINNING OF A DAY OF CELEBRATIONS, PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA LANDED FROM THE GUN-BOAT "DESTOUR" - TO REPEAT SYMBOLICALLY A VOYAGE THAT MADE HISTORY FOR TUNISIA TEN YEARS AGO. IN 1955, PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA RETURNED FROM A LONG EXILE. THAT RETURN IS SEEN BY TUNISIANS AS MAJOR STEP TOWARDS TUNISIA ACHIEVING INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE.

FROM THE PORT, PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA DROVE IN PROCESSION TO THE CENTRE OF THE CAPITAL, TUNIS. THE ROUTE WAS GAILY DECORATED AND OVER IT WERE BUILT THIRTEEN TRIUMPHAL ARCHES - REPRESENTING THE THIRTEEN PROVINCES MAKING UP THE REPUBLIC OF TUNISIA.

LATER, PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA AND HIS WIFE WERE TO GIVE A STATE RECEPTION AT THEIR PRIVATE RESIDENCE - CARTAGE PALACE. CELEBRATIONS CONCLUDE TOMORROW WITH A MASS YOUTH RALLY IN TUNIS.

(TWO DAYS AFTER PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA'S RETURN TO TUNIS IN 1955, TUNISIA WAS GRANTED INTERNAL AUTONOMY - AND LESS THAN TEN MONTHS LATER SHE BECAME THE FIRST FRENCH POSSESSION TO GAIN FULL INDEPENDENCE.)
