Background: ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES, CIVIL DEFENCE ORGANISATIONS AND ACTIVITIES ARE INCREASING IN STEP WITH INTERNATIONAL TENSION. MANY TYPES OF SHELTERS AGAINST RADIATION FALL-OUT, AND BLAST HAVE BEEN DESIGNED, MANUFACTURED AND IMPROVISED AS THE GENERAL POPULACE PREPARE FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF ATOMIC WAR. NEW YORK CIVIL DEFENCE AUTHORITIES HAVE PRODUCED THIS FILM TO SHOW HOW A FALL-OUT SHELTER FOR AN AVERAGE FAMILY CAN BE CONSTRUCTED ALONGSIDE A HOUSE WITH A BASEMENT.

AFTER THE GROUND HAS BEEN MARKED OUT, EARTH MOVING MACHINERY DIGS TO A SUFFICIENT DEPTH TO ALLOW THE SHELTER TO BE CONSTRUCTED WITH THE TOP AT LEAST THREE-FEET BELOW GROUND LEVEL. A DOORWAY IS MADE LEADING OUT OF THE BASEMENT OF THE HOUSE INTO THE SHELTER.

EXCAVATIONS COMPLETED, THE HOLE IS LINED WITH CONCRETE AND A THICK CONCRETE TOP IS PUT ON. THE WHOLE STRUCTURE IS THEN PACKED ROUND WITH EARTH. AN AIR PUMP IN THE BASEMENT OF THE HOUSE CAN BE SWITCHED ON AS THE FAMILY ENTER THE SHELTER. ABOVE GROUND, ALL THAT SHOWS ARE TWO AIR FILTERS.

FITTED OUT WITH BUNKS FOR THE FAMILY TO SLEEP ON, THE SHELTER IS ALSO EQUIPPED WITH STOCKS OF CANNED FOOD, MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND RESCUE EQUIPMENT. THERE IS ALSO A COLLECTION OF GAMES TO KEEP THE FAMILY AMUSED.
