    DESPITE FURTHER SMALL TREMORS, WORKERS HAVE BEGUN CLEARING THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE SERIES OF THE TREMORS LAST WEEKEND IN AND AROUND MECKERING, WESTERN AUSTRALIA. HOUSES IN MECKERING, ABOUT 80 MILES (135 KMS) EAST OF PERTH, WERE COMPLETELY SHATTERED IN THE EARTHQUAKE, AND DAMAGE HAS BEEN ESTIMATED AT ONE MILLION POUNDS STERLING.

    THE AREA AROUND MECKERING HAS BEEN DECLARED A DISASTER AREA AS A RESULT OF THE EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE. THE MAIN STREET OF THE TINY TOWNSHIP WAS LITTERED WITH BROKEN BUILDINGS, CRUSHED CARS AND ABANDONED POSSESSIONS.

    THE LOCAL CHURCH WAS AN ALMOST TOTAL WRECK, AND MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS WERE SEVERELY DAMAGED.

    THE PREMIER OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA, MR. DAVID BRAND, VISITED THE AREA SHORTLY AFTER THE DISASTER AND PROMISED RELIEF AID.

    SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER THE TREMORS, BUT THERE WERE NO FATALITIES.
