    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Political observers in Spain quoted by Reuters news agency report that the attacks on security forces could deepen anger among Spanish generals, already indignant over the kidnapping this week of Lieutenant-General Emilio Villaescusa Quilis, President of the Supreme Council of Military Justice. Demonstrations have been banned, strict controls on gun permits are being enforced and on Friday police advised some left-wing political parties to vacate their offices, apparently fearing an ultra right-wing backlash.

Background: INTRODUCTION: In Spain the government has given the police emergency powers of search and arrest in efforts to halt a wave of political violence which has cost the lives of 10 people in six days.

SYNOPSIS: The most recent killings took place on Friday (28 January), when two policemen and a civil guard were gunned down in Madrid. The policemen were killed in a savings bank and eye-witnesses said the gunmen blazed away with sub machine guns before fleeing in a waiting car.

About two hours later gunmen shot the civil guard outside a bank on the outskirts of Madrid and then hurled a bomb at a civil guard vehicle that arrived on the scene. No-one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, which were carried out in daylight. The latest killings follow the murder of five trade union lawyers on Monday (24 January).

The Spanish communist party issued a communique condemning the attacks and calling for urgent measures to "shatter the plot against the democratic process." After an emergency cabinet meeting called by Prim,e Minister Adolfo Suarez, it was announced that two articles in the spanish Bill of Rights have been suspended and the government also broadcast an appeal for calm. All police and civil guard units have been mobilised.
